Australia records highest number of COVID-related deaths since pandemic

Australian doctors recorded 74 coronavirus-related deaths per day. This is the highest figure for the entire time of the pandemic in the country. The total number of deaths associated with coronavirus has reached 2699.

According to the Ministry of Health, since January 2020, when the first case of coronavirus infection was registered in Australia, doctors have already identified about 1.7 million cases, with 75% of them in the last month. Over the past day, 52.9 thousand people with COVID-19 have been diagnosed in the country, TASS reports.

Doctors have recorded a significant daily increase in the number of people infected since the beginning of the spread of the Omicron strain in the country in December 2021. Large-scale outbreaks have been registered in all regions, except for the state of Western Australia, whose administrative borders have remained closed since April 2020.

Despite the surge in cases, the Australian authorities said they did not intend to introduce new sanitary restrictions and would continue to "open the country to the world."
