The US State Department announced the termination of the operation of SP-2 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine

In the event of a further escalation of the crisis around Ukraine, the US administration intends to prevent the commissioning of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was stated by US State Department spokesman Ned Price on the radio station National Public Radio.

“I want to make it very clear: if Russia invades Ukraine in one way or another, the implementation of Nord Stream 2 will not budge,” the American representative said. He added: "We want to make it as clear as possible."

Until the pipeline is launched, this allows the US administration, along with the German authorities, to put pressure on Russia, Price believes.

At the same time, the representative of the State Department specified: “This is a pressure tool for us, for Germany, for the transatlantic community, because gas does not go through the pipeline. This is not an instrument of pressure for Vladimir Putin.”

At the same time, the United States believes that the possibility of "stopping" the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is an effective lever of influence on Russia. This was stated by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

Nord Stream 2 is a two-line gas pipeline. The length of each of them is 1.2 thousand km. They run from the port of Ust-Luga (Leningrad region) to the German Greifswald. The total capacity of the gas pipeline will be 55 billion cubic meters. m of gas per year.

Earlier it was reported that representatives of the Democratic Party of the US Senate found themselves in an "uncomfortable" position due to the vote to impose sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline: either oppose US President Joe Biden or vote against sanctions.

On January 14, the US Senate rejected a bill on sanctions against Nord Stream 2. The document was proposed by Senator Ted Cruz. However, his idea did not find support either among his colleagues or in the presidential administration.
