Estonian Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets, responding to the words of the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova about the “invalid” Tartu Treaty, said that she considers the Tartu Peace Treaty valid. This is reported by TASS with reference to the Estonian department.
“I consider it important to emphasize that in the 30 years since the restoration of our independence, we have been able to conclude agreements that have proved to be as far-sighted and necessary to ensure our national independence and sovereignty as the Tartu Peace Treaty, which is in force and remains in force,” she said.
Earlier, Zakharova said that the Tartu Peace Treaty, dated 1920, "is invalid and belongs to history."
According to the Tartu Peace Treaty, concluded between the RSFSR and Estonia on February 2, 1920, Ivangorod and part of the Pechora region belonged to the Baltic Republic. After its entry into the USSR in 1940, these territories were ceded to the RSFSR.
Earlier, Estonian President Alar Karis said that NATO should strengthen its presence in Eastern Europe amid rising tensions around Ukraine.
