The authorities of Montenegro decided not to respond to the ban on entry into Russia of the deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs

The Montenegrin authorities said they would not respond to Russia with countermeasures to ban entry to the state secretary (deputy head) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Zoran Milyanich because of the asylum granted to businessman Renat Ismailov. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to a joint statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro, which was broadcast on national television.

“Montenegro will not introduce countermeasures. Montenegro is committed to maintaining a political dialogue with Russia and cooperation in all areas of mutual interest on the basis of equality and mutual respect, including this issue,” the statement says.

It is noted that the authorities consider this decision unreasonable, primarily because the State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is not in charge and was not included in the decision-making on granting asylum to Ismailov.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the closure of Milyanich's entry into Russia. This was a response to the fact that Montenegro granted political asylum to Ismailov.

In mid-October 2021, Russia sent a request to Montenegro for the extradition of businessman Telman Ismailov. In the Russian Federation, the businessman and his brother Vagif were arrested in absentia and are accused in a criminal case of murder and illegal arms trafficking, the RF Investigative Committee reported. Ismayilov was charged on November 11, 2017, the search for the Azerbaijani businessman was carried out through Interpol.
