President to be elected ahead of schedule in Turkmenistan

Early presidential elections will be held in Turkmenistan, Chairman of the country's Central Election Commission Bezirgen Karaev said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

"The Central Election Commission of the country has begun preparations for the early presidential elections, which will be held on March 12," Karaev said.

He stressed that early elections will be organized on behalf of the head of state Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Earlier, Berdimuhamedov announced the need to give way to the young on the way to governing the country "at a new stage" of its development. He said that after 15 years of rule, he would give up the presidency, leaving behind only the post of chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty (upper house of parliament).

At the same time, the president noted that a person brought up in a spiritual environment and in accordance with the high requirements of modernity should become the new head of state. His decision was supported by the honorary elders of the country.
