Bulgarian authorities again opposed the march of neo-Nazis

The leading political party in Bulgaria, "Continue Changes" (PP), declared the inadmissibility of holding a torchlight procession of neo-Nazis, known as the "Lukov March". The event condemned by official Sofia is scheduled for the evening of February 12.

"The 15th year of Bulgaria's membership in the European Union has begun, and we still have not got rid of the shameful ghosts of the past," the PP declaration says. "We condemn any attempt to carry out actions that threaten social peace and the dignity of citizens."

The position of its partners in the ruling coalition was supported by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). “We are tired of raising this topic again every year, every year again asking big questions about Bulgarian democracy, but every year, in some incomprehensible way, this procession is allowed,” BSP deputy Alexander Simov said from the parliamentary rostrum. It is not normal that in the 21st century in Bulgaria we are witnessing such manifestations."

The procession of the far right is intended to honor the memory of General of the Second World War Hristo Lukov. The demonstrators consider him a patriot and the ideological inspirer of the nation, but turn a blind eye to the general's close ties with the Third Reich and frankly pro-fascist views.

For 16 years, a march in honor of Lukov once a year blocked the central streets of Sofia. In 2020, the city administration managed to achieve a ban on the procession. This, however, did not prevent the participants in the egregious action from arranging a torchlight vigil near the general's house, where he was liquidated in 1943.
