The Lithuanian Defense Ministry has decided to accelerate the modernization of the country's army. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the head of the department, Arvydas Anusauskas, this is necessary in order to adequately respond to the "geopolitical security situation in the region."
“We have identified a group of important projects, the faster implementation of which in the near future will significantly strengthen the combat power of the army, and, if possible, could stimulate the national defense industry,” the minister said.
He added that Lithuania also intends to speed up procurement aimed at supporting indirect fire and enhancing the destruction of close combat targets.
He did not specify what exactly is the key in the security situation, but earlier said that the Russian and Belarusian military pose a direct threat to Lithuania.
Earlier, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said that the republic plans to increase the number of military instructors in Ukraine and transfer Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to Kiev. The minister did not specify the number of military instructors and missiles that are planned to be sent to the Ukrainian side.
