US considers sanctions against Russia over cyberattacks on Ukraine

The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs is considering imposing sanctions on Russia for alleged cyberattacks by Moscow against Ukraine. Politico reports.

“If pre-invasion sanctions were in place, they would be linked to Russian cyber attacks inside Ukraine,” said Chris Murphy, a member of the US Senate International Committee.

Some Senate officials are pushing to include sanctions for alleged cyberattacks in a broader bill that would take action against Russia if it “invades” Ukraine, according to the outlet.

Sanctions for Russian cyberattacks are "one of the issues that are under consideration," said Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Menendez.

Earlier it became known that the US Congress did not have time to consider a bill on sanctions against Russia in the event of an escalation of tension around Ukraine.

The day before, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the European Union and the United States could “at any moment” impose sanctions against Russia, depending on the development of the situation around Ukraine.
