Finland's Foreign Ministry says Helsinki still has the option to join NATO

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that the country retains the opportunity to join NATO. He told RIA Novosti about this.

According to him, the Finnish government's report on foreign and security policy is to provide room for maneuver and opportunities for choice.

“Based on this, we retain the opportunity to apply to join NATO,” he said.

Earlier it was reported that Ukraine does not have the right to join NATO. Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul wrote about this Twitter account.

According to him, membership in the organization must be earned, as well as obtaining the consent of all NATO member countries.

Prior to this, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said that the Alliance does not yet plan to accept Ukraine into its membership. He recalled that the alliance expresses support for Kiev, but does not plan to take part in any military operations on the territory of Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, in turn, supported the idea of inviting Ukraine and Georgia.
