Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said that the US Congress will prepare sanctions against Russia, only the timing of their introduction is in question. His words are quoted by TASS.

“Today it is difficult to say what the Democrats and Republicans will come to. The feeling is that the sanctions will be developed… The only question is when they will be introduced,” he said.

Antonov noted that US congressmen support anti-Russian restrictions, the subject of discussion is the development of the most painful measures.

“There is a competition between senators and congressmen about who is ready to hit Russia harder, to propose some kind of sanctions that would cause serious damage to the economic and political image of our country,” the diplomat explained.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke about the sanctions against Russia, prepared by Western countries in the event of an escalation of tension around Ukraine. According to him, they can be introduced "at any moment" - depending on the development of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.
