Author of El Pais article with US responses to Russian security proposals left for Ukraine

One of the authors of an article published in the Spanish El Pais with alleged US and NATO responses to Moscow's proposals for state security guarantees, Ibay Arbide Asa, told RIA Novosti that he was in Ukraine.

According to the journalist, he knew from the very beginning about the reliability of the source.

“The documents are real, but despite this, [authenticity] was checked from other sides,” he said.

Asa also noted that the publication is unlikely to affect the negotiations, "since the positions reflected in the documents are not so different from those publicly voiced." He stated that the duty of any journalist is to publish the truth and that there is hardly any other journalist with such interesting information who would not publish it.

The journalist lives in Greece and works for the Muzungu Producciones company, with which El Pais signed a contract to send a correspondent to Ukraine.

Earlier, El Pais reported that it had received the full text of the confidential response of the United States and NATO to Russia's proposals on security guarantees.

The main difference between the responses of the US and NATO, the newspaper notes, is that Washington is also ready to discuss the principle of indivisibility of security, approved by the OSCE. Based on this principle, Moscow argued that the possible entry of Ukraine into NATO would affect its security. The United States allegedly indicated that it does not share this Russian point of view, but is ready to discuss "interpretations" of this principle. Later, a diplomatic source confirmed the authenticity of the published material.
