Taliban appoints first woman to leadership post after seizing power

The Taliban movement (an organization banned in Russia) for the first time since seizing power in Afghanistan in August 2021 appointed women to leadership positions in Kabul. They will head the maternity hospital and the gynecological clinic, respectively. This was announced on Twitter by the speaker of the group Zabihulla Mujahid.

Dr. Arian was appointed director of the Shahr Ara Gynecological Clinic. Malalay Rahim became the director of a special maternity hospital in Kabul.

A week ago, a Taliban delegation held talks in Norway with Western officials. The Taliban were reportedly required to improve women's rights in order to receive international financial assistance.

Singer Ariana Saeed, who has been called Afghanistan's top pop star, previously spoke to MEPs in Strasbourg, France.

After coming to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban imposed a number of restrictions on women. So, they liquidated the Ministry of Women's Affairs, and instead created the Ministry of Islamic Appeal, Guidance, Commanding the Good and Prohibiting the Reprehensible.

The Taliban also restricted girls' access to schools in most Afghan provinces, required women TV presenters to wear the hijab, and advised local TV channels to refrain from showing films featuring women. It also became known that the Taliban forbade the treatment of women unaccompanied by men.
