Kazakhstan cancels policy agreement with ex-president Nazarbayev

The lower house of the Parliament of Kazakhstan (Mazhilis) agreed with the amendment of the Senate regarding the abolition of the mandatory coordination of the main directions of domestic and foreign policy with the country's first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev. This was announced during the meeting on February 2. The meeting is broadcast on the website of the Mazhilis.

Now the changes in the legislation must be approved by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomar Tokayev.

Legislation was previously amended to retain Nazarbayev's right to serve on Kazakhstan's Constitutional Council and to speak in government and parliament.

On January 5, during the unrest in Kazakhstan, Nazarbayev handed over to Tokayev the post of head of the republic's Security Council, and on January 28, Tokayev became the leader of the ruling Nur Otan party instead of Nazarbayev.

During his address to the nation on January 18, Nazarbayev also stated that President Tokayev has full power in Kazakhstan.
