Britain says it will support Ukraine's possible decision not to join NATO

British Deputy Defense Minister James Hippie said that London would support Ukraine's possible decision to refuse to join NATO.

“If Ukraine decides that it will not become a member of NATO, we will support it. The decision should remain with the Ukrainian government,” he told Sky News.

Earlier, Ukraine's ambassador to the UK, Vadim Prystaiko, admitted that Kiev might abandon its aspiration to join NATO in order to "avoid war" with Russia. Later, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said that the prospect of Ukraine's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance is enshrined in the country's constitution.

The North Atlantic Alliance at the summit in Bucharest in April 2008 adopted a political statement that "Ukraine and Georgia will eventually become members of NATO." In February 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved amendments to the country's constitution, fixing the country's aspirations to join the North Atlantic Alliance. Kiev received the status of a partner of the organization with enhanced opportunities.
