Russia – Dermatologist told how coronavirus affects nails

Russia (bbabo.net), - Novosibirsk dermatologist Anastasia Kolerova spoke about how coronavirus infection can affect nail health.

A patient who was seriously ill with COVID-19 turned to a dermatologist for help. She was hospitalized, treated with antibiotics, steroids and needed oxygen support. And two months after discharge, her hair began to fall out badly.

“But, in addition to this, they also found a change in the nails: transverse red stripes,” says Anastasia Kolerova. - If there are several reasons for hair loss during covid: psychological stress, medications, direct damage to the vascular endothelium by a virus or immune cells, free radicals, then the reason for the change in the nail plates is unknown. It is assumed that this is a consequence of direct or indirect damage to the endothelium of the vessels of the nail bed by the virus.

According to the doctor, the patient had problems with nails for another month. Then they went on their own.

The dermatologist notes that skin rashes most often appear during the acute period of the coronavirus disease. But changes in hair and nails usually develop 1.5-2 months after recovery.
