Zelensky commented on the words about the possible refusal of Ukraine to join NATO

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the words about the possible refusal of Ukraine from NATO membership, which is what many Western leaders want. This is reported by the publication "Strana.UA".

This assumption was made by the Ukrainian ambassador to London, Vadym Prystaiko. If Ukraine stops seeking NATO membership, it will avoid war with Russia, he explained. Subsequently, the diplomat retracted this statement.

“I think that today many leaders are a little hinting to Ukraine that it is possible not to raise the issue of membership in the alliance. It seems to me that no one is hiding this anymore,” Zelensky said.

Earlier, Prystaiko's statement was criticized by Zelensky's press secretary Sergei Nikiforov. He recalled that the desire to join NATO is enshrined in the Ukrainian constitution.

The North Atlantic Alliance at the summit in Bucharest in April 2008 adopted a political statement that "Ukraine and Georgia will eventually become members of NATO." In February 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved amendments to the country's constitution, fixing the country's aspirations to join the North Atlantic Alliance. Kiev received the status of a partner of the organization with enhanced opportunities.
