General Boris Gromov told why he respects the Taliban*

The former commander of the 40th Army of the USSR during the Soviet-Afghan war, Colonel-General Boris Gromov, said in an interview that he respects the attempts of the Taliban (the organization is banned in Russia) to build an independent state.

“People came to power who have been declaring for a long time that they aspired and are striving to ensure that, finally, their Afghanistan belongs to the people of this country, so that no one from outside would interfere and decide for them how to live and build their state . If so, then this is correct and worthy of respect, ”Gromov said.

At the same time, he noted that under the Taliban, Afghanistan "is unlikely to be a secular country."

The general also expressed hope that the Taliban would take into account Moscow's interests in the region when implementing its policy.

“Of course, most likely, the Taliban, when implementing their domestic and foreign policies, will take into account, to varying degrees, the interests of all interested states, primarily Russia and China. I would like to hope so, ”Gromov said.
