Belarusian government proposes important changes to land law

The Cabinet of Ministers of Belarus proposed a serious amendment of the legislation in the field of land relations. Roman Golovchenko's government submitted its proposals in the form of a draft decree on February 15 for consideration by the country's president, the press service of Alexander Lukashenko reports.

"The government believes that there is a need for a serious adjustment of the current legislation," the head of state said, outlining a number of fundamental issues that should be taken into account when making a decision.

First of all, he clarified, fair basic rules for the disposal of land underlie stability in society, drawing attention to the fact that attitudes towards it are one of the most important issues in the life of any country.

“It was because of it that most wars and conflicts started in the world. And territorial claims are considered the most difficult and painful both in interstate and local, even private issues,” Lukashenka stated. For the majority of ordinary citizens, he stressed, land legislation is comparable in its sensitivity to constitutional provisions, since it concerns them personally.

That is why, the president emphasized the attention of the meeting participants, the administration of land relations is not just a set of normative rules. According to him, legislation in this area is a compressed centuries-old experience and even traditions of using land in a particular territory by a particular people. "The reverent attitude to the land is deeply embedded in the mentality of people, in their historical memory, culture, traditions of their ancestors. And I must say that all peoples, if we take the criterion of land relations, are very similar to each other - they all value the land on which they live, and are ready to fight for it even in extreme forms," the Belarusian leader said.

The speaker recalled how, at the dawn of independence, the path of evolutionary development of land relations was chosen in Belarus. "It is thanks to the high culture of land use that we have achieved success in agriculture and are calmly ensuring our food security. More than forty percent of the country's territory is covered with forests, and on this renewable basis we are gradually developing the timber processing industry," Lukashenka summed up.
