French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that Russian President Vladimir Putin told French President Emmanuel Macron that the initiative to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics would not be taken into account, RIA Novosti reports.
He recalled that on February 15, State Duma deputies supported a draft resolution on an appeal to Putin with a request to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics.
“President Putin told President Macron that this is an initiative of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and that he will not take this initiative into account. It is very good. Because if this process had gone to the end, then the Minsk agreements would have been destroyed, ”Le Drian said at a meeting of the Senate commission on international affairs.
The politician, however, did not specify when exactly this conversation between the Russian and French leaders took place.
Earlier, during a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Moscow, Vladimir Putin commented on the statement of the State Duma, saying that he would proceed from doing everything to solve the problems of Donbass, but the potential of the Minsk agreements had not yet been exhausted.
