Inflation in the US and Britain beats multi-year records

The current inflation rates in the US and the UK are updating multi-year highs. In America, consumer prices rose 7.5 percent in the past 12 months, the highest since 1982, according to CNN.

The main driver of inflationary processes in the US, according to local economists, is a sharp increase in oil prices. Their further appreciation from current levels by another 20 percent will lead to another round of accelerating inflation and breaking through the 10 percent level. Such a "shocking" figure has not been seen in the United States for more than 40 years - the last time such a thing was recorded in October 1981.

At the same time, the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) on February 16 reported inflation in the United Kingdom that was the highest in the last 30 years. According to the published data of the ONS, the increase in prices over the past year reached 5.5 percent, the largest since March 1992 (then the figure was 7.1 percent).

The Guardian newspaper clarifies: as in the case of the United States, the root cause of the acceleration of inflation was the rise in prices in the fields of energy (gas prices increased by 28.3 percent, and for electricity - by 19.2 percent) and transport. Albion's price increase is expected to continue this spring. As the British Central Bank has warned, inflation may peak in April and reach 7.25 percent.
