They managed to do it. But now a new project is going to be implemented nearby, which also threatens an important historical site for Moscow.

The construction, which was deployed last year 25 meters from the entrance to the museum, really threatened the house, which was built virtually without a foundation.

- The studies and surveys carried out during the examination were insufficient. Letters stating that we are against construction in the immediate vicinity of the museum have been sent to the Moscow Department of Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Culture and the Moscow City Duma, ”Sergey Arkhangelov, director of the Leo Tolstoy Estate Museum in Khamovniki, told Rodina.

According to the documentation posted on the Active Citizen portal, the initiator of the project is Sechenov University, which plans to place it on the territory of a hostel. Public hearings on the issue of construction next to the museum-estate of Tolstoy took place at the end of last year.

“These plans were not coordinated with the State Museum of Tolstoy,” Natalya Zubkova, curator of the memorial house of the Leo Tolstoy Museum-Estate, spoke in December about the new construction.

According to the current legislation, such a construction next to a monument of the history of culture and garden and park art is impossible. Local residents believe that in addition to dormitories, they are going to build commercial space in this area. As in the past year, the residents of Khamovniki are trying to stop another large-scale construction next to the house, which 140 years ago, in 1882, Tolstoy bought for the family.

The family has lived here for 19 years. And the museum in Khamovniki was organized already in 1921. Gradually the estate lost its historical surroundings. Now, due to high-rise construction, it may end up, as they say in the museum, "in the well." And the lack of light threatens the death of the garden.

When Tolstoy first came to see the estate, it was already dusk. The owner said with annoyance: "Lev Nikolayevich, you won't see anything."

Museum staff and residents of Khamovniki want new generations to see the garden too, and not the new high-rise buildings that the city is already built up with, and intend to seek the cancellation of the next construction project next to the Tolstoy Museum-Estate.
