Moldova - Karp about the Republican Stadium: We will announce the details of the transfer of this land

Moldova (bbabo.net), - The theme of the land of the former Republican stadium has again come into public view. Deputies of the PCRM-PSRM Bloc say that the intention of the authorities to sell the plot to the US for the construction of a new embassy building is a mistake, and the land should be used for the construction of a social facility. In response, the deputies from the ruling party say that, according to the project already implemented by the US Embassy, an embassy building will be built on the territory of the former Republican stadium, and a recreation area for citizens will also be landscaped, notes ipn.md

Deputies of the PCRM-PSRM Bloc protested yesterday before the government against the authorities' decision to sell a 5.9-hectare plot in the center of Chisinau to the United States for the construction of a new embassy. The socialists accuse the authorities of selling the country piece and insist that this land remain the property of the state. Moreover, the opposition notes that the government is hiding all information related to this deal.

“What Plahotniuc started has a continuation now. We returned the Republican Stadium to the ownership of the state through a legislative initiative. I believe and hope that the US Embassy can come to a consensus with the Moldovan authorities to identify another site for the construction of a new building. On this site and the Chisinau City Hall announced their intention to build a park. We advocate that a social facility be built on the site of this stadium. I don't have anything against the US Embassy, but there are many other places where they can build an embassy,” said Grigore Novak, MP of the PCRM-PSRM Bloc, during the Bună Seara program on the public TV channel.

In response, MPs from the ruling party say that the US intention is not only to build a new embassy building in the center of the capital, but also to redesign the area. The authorities say the Republican Stadium would not have been abandoned if it had not been demolished in 2007 at the behest of former Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev.

“The government will announce the details of the transfer of this land. In the near future, we have to deal with several situations. Let's put the Chisinau Arena into operation, because this is buried money, and we need to find solutions for the Republican Stadium. The US Embassy notes that there will be not only an embassy, but also a recreation park, it will be a social zone. In fact, the residents of Chisinau also demand this, so that the park can also be created. There is no park in this area. With the Republican stadium, it was necessary to first conduct a feasibility study, establish construction costs, how much money is provided in the budget, is it a public-private or public partnership, and then demolish it,” said PAS deputy Lilian Karp.

Political commentator Anatol Taranu says the issue is being widely discussed by political groups with anti-American views. And after the huge investments that the US Government has made for the development and modernization of the Republic of Moldova, the sale of this land is a gesture of gratitude.

“The United States has helped us a lot all these years. We received almost $2 billion from American taxpayers' money. This land, which is in a derelict state, will remain derelict for many years to come. The problem is that in our society, someone is trying to play on people's anti-American feelings, feelings that have been cultivated for decades. The United States will rebuild this space in record time, and a building will be built there that will match the architecture of Chisinau, because they will comply with all requirements,” said political commentator Anatol Taranu.

The bill providing for the sale of the land of the Republican Stadium to the US Embassy was adopted by the “Vlad Plahotniuc regime” in 2018. In 2020, the Parliament, on the initiative of the Socialists, canceled this bill, and the land returned to public ownership. Subsequently, through the Constitutional Court, the law was repealed.
