Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev said during an extraordinary meeting that Ukraine behaved in relation to the regions of Donbass as if it did not need them. The broadcast is conducted by the TV channel "Russia 24".

“If we talk about the situation around the DPR and LPR, it is obvious that Ukraine does not need these territories in principle. This is a bargaining chip in trade for the status of Ukraine. The inhabitants of these territories do not receive any support from the Ukrainian authorities, but are subjected to mass repressions,” Medvedev said.

During his speech, the chairman of the Security Council recalled the situation around Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008, when he, as president, decided to recognize these territories. Thus, according to Medvedev, it was possible to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people living there.

Earlier, the heads of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to recognize the independence of the DPR and LPR.
