Russia - Putin: Ukraine refused to fulfill obligations on Soviet debts

Russia (bbabo.net), - Russia took over the payment of the Soviet debts of all the republics of the former USSR, including Ukraine, but Kiev did not ratify the agreement on the transfer of foreign assets to Moscow in exchange. This was recalled by Russian President Vladimir Putin in his address to the Russians.

According to him, by the end of 1991, the debt obligations of the USSR to foreign states and international funds amounted to about $100 billion. Initially, it was assumed that these loans would be paid by all the republics in proportion to their economic potential.

“However, Russia took upon itself the repayment of the entire Soviet debt, paid off in full and completed this process in 2017. In return, the newly independent states had to give up part of their Soviet foreign assets,” the president said.

“A corresponding agreement was reached with Ukraine in December 1994, but Kiev did not ratify the agreement, but later simply refused to comply, putting forward claims to the diamond fund, gold reserves, as well as property and other assets of the former Soviet Socialist Republic abroad,” Vladimir Putin said.
