Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Fox News that US President Joe Biden actually gave Russia the green light to deal with the Ukrainian crisis.

According to him, Biden could have stopped the construction of Nord Stream 2 a few months earlier and imposed “real sanctions” on Russia. Instead, the US leader introduced a limited package of sanctions that did not intimidate Moscow.

Pompeo added that NATO should increase its presence in Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia "to protect these countries."

Earlier, Biden announced the introduction of new sanctions against Russia in connection with Moscow's recognition of the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics.

On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the sovereignty of the DNR and LNR. Agreements on cooperation and mutual assistance between Russia and the republics were also signed.
