The Federation Council threatened the United States with a “not necessarily symmetrical” response to sanctions against Russia

Andrey Klimov, deputy chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, said that Russia could take retaliatory - adequate, but not necessarily symmetrical - measures against US sanctions, RIA Novosti reports.

So he commented on the statement of US President Joseph Biden, who said that the US was imposing sanctions on Russian elites, sovereign government debt and two banks.

“We have not yet seriously turned on our potential,” Klimov emphasized.

He added that anti-Russian restrictions hit the American economy, and the threat of sanctions on Russia's sovereign debt is insignificant. Biden's own statements are designed for American and European listeners and produce a "miserable impression."

“If this is the leader of the Western world, I pity the Western world. An elderly man is standing, reading what is written on the prompter,” Klimov said.

The announcement of sanctions against Russia followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. On February 21, he signed the relevant decrees. The United States, Canada and the United Kingdom also announced the imposition of sanctions against Russia, the DPR and the LPR. The EU also supported sanctions against the commanders of Russian forces in the DPR and LPR, and also discussed sanctions against two Russian banks and financing of Russia's sovereign debt.
