“Russia's actions pose a serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security and will have geostrategic implications. NATO will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the security of all allies. We are deploying additional defensive ground and air forces in the eastern part of the alliance, as well as sea (forces). Today we held consultations under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty. We have decided, in line with defensive plans to protect all allies, to take additional steps to strengthen containment and defense measures across the alliance,” the statement said.
The alliance stressed that the measures taken "remain preventive, proportionate" and are not aimed at escalation.
