Zakharova called the Council of Europe mired in double standards

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, spoke about the decision of the Council of Europe (CE) to suspend Russia's powers in the organization. Her comment was published on the website of the Foreign Ministry.

The diplomat said that such a decision is "blatantly politicized." According to her, it "became yet another evidence that the Council of Europe has lost its independence, has become an obedient instrument of the Western bloc and its satellites, and is mired in double standards."

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev called the suspension of Russia's membership in the Council of Europe "a reason to slam the door."

On the eve it became known that the Council of Europe suspended Russia's rights to representation in the organization against the backdrop of a special operation of the Russian Federation in the Donbass. The suspension of membership applies to the work of the country in PACE, the Committee of Ministers of Foreign Affairs (CMCE) and the ECtHR.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a military special operation to protect Donbass in response to a request for help from the heads of the LPR and DPR.
