Russia and the CIS (bbabo.net) - An agreement has been reached between the Russian Airborne Forces unit and the Ukrainian security battalion of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on joint security of the facility. This was stated on February 25 by the representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense Igor Konashenkov.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the joint actions of the Russian paratroopers and the Ukrainian NPP security battalion are a guarantee that Ukrainian nationalist formations or other terrorist organizations will not be able to take advantage of the situation in Ukraine to organize a nuclear provocation.

“Radioactive background is normal. The NPP personnel continue to service the facilities in the normal mode and monitor the radioactive situation,” Konashenkov said.

On April 26, 1986, the largest nuclear accident in history took place on it.

The explosion destroyed the 4th power unit, a large amount of radioactive substances entered the atmosphere and settled on the surrounding area.

The nuclear power plant was finally closed on December 15, 2000, and a 30-kilometer exclusion zone was established around it.
