Serdar Berdimuhamedov to succeed his father as president

Russia and the CIS (bbabo.net) - The current president of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, will be able to transfer power to his 40-year-old son Serdar, who won the presidential election.

The young politician enlisted the support of 72.97% of the total number of citizens who exercised their right to vote (97.17%). Such figures were announced by the CEC of the country.

Berdimuhamedov Jr. competed with 8 candidates. His closest rival, vice-rector of the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports Khydyr Nunnaev, won 11.09% of the vote, Agadzhan Bekmyradov, deputy head of the Mary velayat, came in third with 7.22%. The rest of the candidates did not manage to overcome the three percent threshold.

The last elections became early. According to the current legislation of the country, voting was to be held only after two years. However, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedova previously noted that he had already reached the “age of the Prophet” and was ready to hand over power to the young. Observers do not exclude that the current head of state will retain certain positions, including the position of head of the upper house of parliament (khalk maslahaty).
