Ukraine is waiting for an international document on security guarantees

Ukraine (bbabo.net), - A document on international security guarantees for Ukraine may appear on August 29-30. This was stated by the head of the Office of the Ukrainian President Andriy Yermak after a meeting with advisers to the heads of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Hungary.

He stressed that Kyiv considers security guarantees to be a “very important issue”, which the Ukrainian authorities constantly talk about with all partners.

“By the end of this month [August], I think it’s the 29th or 30th, we can count on the appearance of the first document, recommendations on our group with Mr. [former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh] Rasmussen,” he said.

According to Yermak, he has already read the text, and the document will be "very powerful."

In early July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Rasmussen, along with Yermak, would lead a platform to develop security guarantees for Kyiv.

Then Yermak stated that guarantees should be effective and cover military, political, diplomatic, financial and other spheres. According to him, guarantees should also include sanctions policy.

The restrictions should continue until Russia gives a “guarantee of non-repetition of aggression” and compensates for the damage, the head of the Zelensky Office stressed.

Ukraine demands international security guarantees in exchange for declaring a neutral status and refusing to aspire to join NATO. The Ukrainian authorities believe that permanent members of the UN Security Council, as well as Turkey, Germany, Italy, Israel, Poland and Canada can become guarantors.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that security guarantees should be provided not only to Ukraine, but also to all European countries, as well as Russia, so that no one strengthens their security at the expense of the security of others.

The minister stressed that guarantees for Ukraine cannot apply to Crimea and regions whose independence has been recognized by Russia. Lavrov noted that initially during the negotiations in Istanbul, Kyiv agreed that security guarantees should not include Crimea and the regions of eastern Ukraine, but then changed its mind.

"We got stuck" because of their inconsistency, because of their desire to "play games" every time," he said.
