US considers unfreezing Afghan central bank funds

The United States thought about unfreezing part of the funds of the Afghan Central Bank that they had frozen. This is about 3.5 billion dollars, which will be transferred to Afghanistan through the Swiss Bank for International Settlements, TRT World reports, citing a source close to the government.

To control the spending of funds, it is planned to form an international panel of experts.

Recall that 9 billion dollars of assets of the Afghan Central Bank were frozen by the United States a year ago after the return of the Taliban (an organization banned in the Russian Federation) to power. This measure caused a severe economic crisis in the war-ravaged country.

Afghanistan is likely to be able to get its money back, but "the US will require strict accountability for spending to avoid financing terrorism, and appoint a third party to oversee the use of the funds," the source said.
