Russian Ambassador summoned to MFAEI: Moldova does not recognize referendums in Novorossiya

Moldova (bbabo.net), - Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Chisinau Oleg Vasnetsov was summoned today, October 6, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova. According to the head of the MFAEI, Nick Popescu, he will be informed of the official position of the authorities in connection with the referendums on joining the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics to the Russian Federation, as well as in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions of Ukraine.

“The Republic of Moldova has not recognized, does not recognize and will not recognize the results of the so-called plebiscite and most strongly condemns the attempt of illegitimate annexation of the occupied territories of Ukraine, a fact that contradicts all the principles of international law,” the agency’s press release says.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry stressed that they support Ukraine's efforts to restore sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and call on Russia to stop military aggression against the neighboring country.

Recall that the Moldovan authorities from the first days of the Russian special operation in Ukraine took the side of the Kyiv regime and, despite the neutrality enshrined in the constitution, provides Ukraine with various assistance, including, in addition to humanitarian, sends fuel and lubricants for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and provides a corridor through its territory for the transportation of Western weapons . The Republic of Moldova partially supported Western anti-Russian sanctions.

Earlier, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, joined the so-called “Crimean Platform” (an international format invented by President Vladimir Zelensky), and signed a joint document that obliges Chisinau to “put pressure on Russia so that it stops the temporary occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol and regains control Ukraine over this territory. Now she also says that she does not recognize referendums in Novorossiya.

“Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporozhye and Crimea are Ukraine. Moldova remains steadfast in supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” Sandu concluded.

As bbabo.net reported, Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu has already made a statement that Moldova does not recognize the results of "referendums on joining Russia" and considers these regions of Ukraine "temporarily occupied by Russia."

"Moldova strongly condemns Russia's plan to annex the occupied regions of Ukraine through fictitious referendums," Popescu said.

For Moldova, the issue of reaction to the will of the people and their right to self-determination is acute, since the republic itself has a thirty-year conflict with Transnistria that remains unresolved.

In Transnistria, a referendum on the future of the unrecognized country was held back in 2006. More than 97% of the participants were in favor of independence with subsequent free accession to Russia. Then the Supreme Council of Pridnestrovie addressed the State Duma, the Federation Council and the President of Russia with a request to recognize the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic as a sovereign independent state.
