Erdogan proposes to enshrine the right of women to wear hijab in the Constitution

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke at the Justice and Development Party congress in Ankara on Wednesday about the need to create constitutional guarantees for women's right to wear the hijab, Sabah reported.

Commenting on the opposition Republican People's Party's call to amend laws to give women the choice to wear or not wear a head covering in public, Erdogan said: "Let's fix this problem in the Constitution, not in the law."

He emphasized that thanks to the efforts of his party, Turkish women finally received the freedom to wear a headscarf. “The issue of clothing in general and the hijab in particular is a natural human right. It should not be regulated by laws or the Constitution. But since it is on the agenda today, I propose to pass Constitutional Amendment 5735, which will secure the right of women working in the public sector to wear a headscarf, with a clear explanation that no laws contrary to this amendment can be implemented. ", he said.

Recall that Turkish women fought for many decades against laws prohibiting them from wearing headscarves in schools and universities, as well as any public organizations where they worked. This policy was carried out despite the fact that most women in the country wear the hijab. And the Republican People's Party supported these restrictions on the right to choose women's clothing. In particular, its leader, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, stated that "the headscarf poses a threat to modern democracy and harms public order, peace and unity."
