South Korea may buy Israeli drone detection system

Greater Middle East (bbabo.net), - The South Korean Armed Forces are considering buying a Sky Spotter system from the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems as part of an expansion of the program to detect North Korean drones, Yonhap reports, citing a source in the country's Ministry of Defense. #

The acquisition is being considered amid fierce criticism after five North Korean drones infiltrated South Korean airspace in late December, the report said.

A decision on whether the military will approach the government with a purchase proposal will be made in the coming weeks, the agency source said.

The Sky Spotter system is designed to detect and track aerial objects, including unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as balloons and kites, which are used for terrorist attacks.

North Korean drones crossed the border between North and South Korea on the morning of December 26. In response, Seoul launched fighter jets and helicopters into the air, but the military failed to shoot down the drones. During the interception of drones, a KA-1 attack aircraft crashed, Seoul blamed Pyongyang for the accident.
