Moldova wants to buy gas in Turkey: Chisinau was invited to a summit in Istanbul

Greater Middle East (bbabo.net), - Turkey is negotiating with Moldova on the supply of natural gas to the republic. This was stated today, January 30, by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey Fatih Donmez in Istanbul at the forum "The Century of Turkey in Energy".

He noted that the Istanbul Gas Summit will be held on February 14-15, where they plan to invite representatives of gas producing countries and consumers from among European countries, including a delegation from Chisinau.

“Soon Turkey will become a big supermarket for gas trading. In this regard, we will hold the Istanbul Gas Summit on February 14-15. At it, we will bring together manufacturers from the Middle East, from the countries of the Caspian Sea, Central Asia and consumers from Europe at the same table,” Donmez said.

The minister added that over the past 20 years, Turkey has made the necessary investments that will allow it to become a center for natural gas trading. These are capacities for transportation, storage, LNG tanks, international pipelines, and a wholesale market has been created.

“We are also negotiating with consumers in our region. An agreement was signed with Bulgaria for the supply of about 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually until 2035. This is approximately 30% of Bulgaria's annual consumption. We are conducting similar negotiations with North Macedonia, Romania and Moldova,” concluded Fatih Donmez.

Earlier, during a recent visit to Ankara, Chairman of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Grosu agreed with Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez to strengthen the Moldovan-Turkish cooperation in the energy sector.

“The current government is interested in identifying as many diversification and energy efficiency projects as possible in order to stop depending on suppliers that use energy resources for political purposes,” Grosu said.

The Republic of Moldova will be represented at the Istanbul Gas Summit by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spinu.

As reported by bbabo.net, the Republic of Moldova is currently redirecting all the gas it receives from Russia to Transnistria, purchasing electricity in exchange. Chisinau meets its needs for blue fuel from the stocks made (stored in Ukraine and Romania), which it expects to replenish through the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. In January, the Cabinet of Ministers approved special regulations for the uninterrupted operation of gas transport in reverse mode.
