UN special rapporteur complains of wave of threats following her report on 'Israeli genocide' in Gaza

Francesca Albanese, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, said she has received threats since her high-profile report that “there are reasonable grounds to believe that Israel has committed several acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip.”

On Tuesday, Albanese presented a report to the UN Human Rights Council, entitled "Anatomy of a Genocide", according to which there are clear indications that Israel has violated three of the five points listed in the UN Genocide Convention. As Albanese points out, this is: “the killing of group members; serious harm to the physical or mental integrity of group members; and the deliberate subjection of a group to conditions of existence calculated to bring about its total or partial physical destruction.”

At a press conference in Geneva, Albanese told reporters that she has received threats, but so far, in her opinion, this does not require additional precautions.

“Am I under pressure? Yes, but this does not change either my obligations or the results of my work. This of course outrages me, but it only pushes me even more not to give up,” she said. She also added that from the very beginning, since she took office in 2022, she has received an endless stream of threats related to her activities.

The UN official added: "At some point, I may decide to resign simply because I also have a private life that I would like to enjoy, but that will not happen because I am being demonized or attacked."

When asked by journalists to tell more about the nature of the threats and who they were coming from, Albanese refused to answer.
