Schröder is confident that his friendship with Putin can help find a solution to Ukraine

Ukraine (bbabo.net), - Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (held the post in 1998-2005) believes that his friendly relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin could help in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. He stated this in an interview with the DPA agency.

“We have collaborated intelligently over the years. Perhaps this can still help find a solution based on negotiations, I don’t see any other way,” he said, citing excerpts from TASS.

Schroeder believes that personal relationships can be useful for solving complex political problems.

“And therefore I think it is completely wrong to forget everything that was positive between us in politics in the past. This is not my style, I don’t do it,” the ex-chancellor emphasized.

He believes that in the situation around Ukraine a new attempt at mediation at the government level is necessary and that it would be better if it were undertaken by Berlin and Paris.

“France and Germany must take the lead here,” he said.

According to the former chancellor, it is “obvious” that the conflict “cannot end with the complete defeat of one side or the other.”

Schroeder called speculation about the possibility of Russia using atomic weapons in Ukraine or a Russian attack on NATO nonsense.
