In the dispute over reparations with Germany, Poland intends to involve Israel

- Warsaw plans to invite representatives of Israel to negotiations with Berlin on the payment of post-war reparations. This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in an interview with the German edition of Spiegel.

The editors asked the Polish prime minister how he assesses the chances of receiving an unprecedented amount of compensation from Germany for the damage caused during World War II (Warsaw declared 6.2 trillion zlotys - 1.3 trillion dollars).

“6.2 trillion zł is not an unrealistic amount,” says Morawiecki. — This is the annual budget of the entire Federal Republic, i.e. the federal budget and the budget of the federal states. But Poland is the country that suffered the most during the Second World War, but never received any compensation for it.

The algorithm of actions for "knocking out" money from Berlin, according to the Polish prime minister, is as follows:

“First, we will address the [German] government with a diplomatic note. We consider the German legal analysis incorrect, according to which Poland refused reparations under the agreement with the GDR in 1953. At that time, the Soviet Union forced Poland to do so. The Poles could not demand compensation from the socialist "brotherly people". Moscow forced its then governor in Warsaw, Bolesław Bierut, to do so. The Polish parliament has not taken a decision on this issue, and there is no evidence that this issue was discussed in the government. The instruments of ratification have not been deposited with the UN.”

Further, according to Morawiecki, negotiations should follow in Berlin.

“We want to invite representatives of Israel to them, since half of the victims of the Poles are citizens of Jewish origin. It is possible that later we will submit our claims to international courts,” the Polish prime minister said.

Today, there are quite tense relations between Warsaw and Jerusalem, primarily because of the Polish legislation. The fact is that 4 years ago, Poland passed a law prohibiting the discussion of the actions of the Poles against the Jews during the Second World War (read: atrocities, including robberies and murders, against the Jews committed by the Poles). In 2021, a Holocaust restitution law was also passed, which limited the ability of Jews to return property left after the war in the ownership of the Polish state.

It is obvious that even if Israel agrees to represent Poland in negotiations with Germany, it will require Warsaw to revise the actually anti-Semitic laws.
