NBC reported Tuesday, based on its sources, that the proposed Israeli response to an Iranian attack would only involve attacks on military targets and perhaps not even in Iran itself.

In preparation for the attack, Israel last week formulated several options for its response, the sources said. The final decision, however, has not yet been made.

Three sources said that given the fact that the Iranian attack did not result in mass killings or destruction, Israel could choose one of the less aggressive options of bombing outside Iran's sovereign territory, such as in Syria. The sources do not expect Israel's response to be directed at senior Iranian officials, but will focus on the supply or storage of missiles and weapons intended for Hezbollah.

The US does not intend to take part in a military response, the officials added. They expect Israel to share information about its actions with Washington in advance because it could have consequences for the US military in the region.

As with the Iranian attack, officials in Washington are envisioning a sustained “psychic attack” on Iran first.

Western allies are putting pressure on Jerusalem to persuade it to abandon its military response. In return, they promise any heavy sanctions against Iran.
