Moldova - Popescu: Russia approves the idea of destroying ammunition in Kolbasna

Moldova (bbabo.net), - An explosion on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, similar to the one that occurred in the port of Beirut, would be a real disaster for the entire region. For this reason, Russia approves of the idea of destroying the ammunition stored in warehouses in Kolbasna. This was stated by the head of the Moldovan diplomacy, Nicu Popescu. According to the official, there is a constant dialogue with Moscow, and progress has been made in some areas. For example, next year a meeting of the Moldovan-Russian intergovernmental commission will be organized, at which the possibility of resuming the export of Moldovan products to the Russian market will be considered, ipn.md reports.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, during discussions in Moscow and in other capitals, Chisinau insists on the beginning of the destruction of ammunition stored in Kolbasna - at the largest such warehouses in Eastern Europe. According to him, the presence of ammunition on the left bank of the Dniester threatens the security of the entire region.

“The Russian Federation expresses its readiness for us to move towards the destruction of weapons stored in Kolbasna. On this issue, the Russian Federation states that it is also interested in progress, because absolutely no one is interested in an explosion on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, similar to the one that happened in Beirut a year and a half ago. It could cost us human lives and be a real disaster. We maintain a dialogue with the Russian Federation, on the basis of which we hope to come to the destruction of these ammunition, ”Nicu Popescu said on the air of the program“ Dimensiunea Diplomatică ”on the public TV channel.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, social protection of Moldovan citizens living in Russia and the possibility of expanding the Russian sales market, primarily for Moldovan agricultural products, are priority issues on the agenda of negotiations with officials from Moscow.

“In March, we will organize a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation, during which we will discuss the issue of unblocking trade and export of our products to the Russian market. There are several topics that will be discussed at the site of the Intergovernmental Commission. Hundreds of thousands of Moldovan citizens work and live in Russia, they have interests. Thousands of citizens work in the agricultural sector, and their well-being depends on our ability to expand exports to the Russian market. We must be guided by the interests of these citizens, ”explained Popescu.

In November, Niku Popescu met in Moscow with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. During the discussions, Chisinau insisted on a mutually beneficial pragmatic partnership between the two countries. In addition, Popescu said that the presence of Russian troops on the territory of the Republic of Moldova contradicts the neutral status of the country and demanded that Moscow withdraw them without any conditions.
