Hooligans in France burned 874 cars on New Year's Eve

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen said that hundreds of cars were set on fire across France on New Year's Eve. But, he said, the riots were less than in previous years. According to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, 874 cars were set on fire, which is almost 450 cars less than on New Year's Eve the year before last.

According to the German agency DPA, a study was recently conducted in France that showed that cars in this country on New Year's Eve have been set on fire since the early 1990s. It turned out that this phenomenon is especially common in poor areas. The reasons for hooligans are very different: from personal troubles to anger at politicians. The number of cars set on fire was especially high at the turn of 2007/2008, when Nicolas Sarkozy became president. It also rose sharply in the midst of the yellow vest protests under President Emmanuel Macron.

Gerald Darmanen also said that the police detained 441 people last night. At least two law enforcement officers were slightly injured after being shot at with fireworks. In total, more than 95,000 police and gendarmes were on duty to ensure compliance with the rules to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
