Kim Jong-un visited the Kumsusan memorial complex

Kim Jong-un began his public activities by visiting the Kumsusan memorial complex in Pyongyang on January 1, where the previous leaders, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, rest in embalmed form. The DPRK leader also took a photo with the production leaders. This was announced today by the Central Telegraph Agency of Korea (CTAC).

"On January 1, 2022, the General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the DPRK State Council, dear comrade Kim Jong-un, visited the Kumsusan Memorial Complex," the CTAC said on January 2.

During the event, Kim was accompanied by several dozen people from the top leadership of the DPRK - leading representatives of the party, military circles, as well as the government and parliament of the DPRK, including Kim Jong-un's younger sister Kim Yeo-jong, who was in the third or fourth row of escorts.

All participants gave memory and respect to the leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong-un, who are embalmed in the "Hall of Eternal Life" of the complex. Flowers were laid to the late leaders by the Central Committee of the WPK, the State Council, the Supreme People's Assembly and the government of the DPRK.

After that, Kim Jong-un took a group photo in front of the building of the complex with the workers "who made a great contribution to the implementation of the decisions of the party congress."

Kim Jong-un's visit was his first public activity in the new year. Experts had anticipated this move, since Kim has consistently visited the memorial site on January 1 every year since 2013. An exception was made only once - on January 1, 2018, when Kim was not personally present at the public ceremony, and it was headed by Deputy Chairman of the TPK Choi Ryong-hae Choi Ryong-hae and the head of the DPRK's GNR (parliament) Kim Yong Nam.

The observers also noted that this time his wife Lee Seol-chu was not with Kim, but she visited the Kumsusan complex with him on January 1 only once - in 2017.
