CSTO: the number of peacekeepers in Kazakhstan will not be disclosed

Aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) delivered to Kazakhstan the first units of the Russian peacekeeping force of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). In addition to Russian units, servicemen from Armenia, Belarus, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan will be involved in the operation.

“The number of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces (CMF) is not disclosed at the first stage of any of the countries - it will be determined by the operational necessity and the nature of the tasks performed,” said CSTO spokesman Vladimir Zainetdinov.

At the same time, he noted that the tasks of the peacekeeping contingent will include the protection of facilities and infrastructure, which will be carried out strictly in accordance with the mandate of the CSTO. “The KMC will not interfere in the internal political situation in Kazakhstan - their task is to separate the opposing sides and prevent bloodshed and death of citizens,” Zainetdinov added.

On January 5, against the backdrop of protests and pogroms in Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev appealed to the heads of the CSTO states with a request to assist Kazakhstan in overcoming "this terrorist threat."

The Russian Foreign Ministry supported the adoption of urgent measures in Kazakhstan, calling the events in the country "an attempt to undermine the security and integrity of the state, inspired from the outside."
