Russia - Doctors performed the most difficult operation on a newborn

Russia (bbabo.net), - The parents of little Miron, a spouse from Samara, had been planning a pregnancy for a long time and were looking forward to their first child. But at the 13th week, an ultrasound scan showed that the child was developing with a defect - the baby's internal organs grew in the umbilical cord, and not in the abdominal cavity. In medicine, this is called an omphalocele, or hernia of the umbilical cord. Quite a rare pathology. According to experts, one out of 4-10 thousand children is born with such a defect.

The doctors consulted and, since the ultrasound defect was of medium size, they decided that it could be corrected after the birth of the child. With a large hernia, pregnancy is usually recommended to be interrupted. As soon as the boy was born, he was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit for newborns and premature infants of the N.N. Ivanova.

Surgeons corrected the pathology centimeter by centimeter every 4-6 hours

- We knew that we would have to operate on a child with a pathology, we were preparing for a small size. But it turned out that the baby has the largest omphalocele in our practice, - recalls Evgeny Novozhenov, head of the surgical department. - The peculiarity is that all organs - the stomach, liver, small and large intestines - did not just come out of the abdominal cavity, as with ordinary hernias, but developed outside of it. Therefore, it was not possible to place them in the abdominal cavity at the same time: its volume did not allow it.

Surgeons Evgeny Novozhenov and Artem Izosimov decided to gradually immerse the organs into the abdominal cavity. Usually they are transferred to a special container bag, which is sutured to the anterior abdominal wall, and only after that the doctors gradually immerse the organs into the abdominal cavity. Then the surgeons remove the container and the skin is sutured.

- Assessing the size of the defect, we realized that if the bag is sewn to the skin, then later it will not be enough to close the defect, - says Dr. Novozhenov. - Therefore, hemmed to the material pasted on it. Here we were rescued by teips - adhesive tape made of fabric, with a strong fixation. It was a very difficult moment: the longer the organs were out of the abdominal cavity, the greater the chance of infection. If we dived faster, then we could squeeze them hard and damage them. Within seven days, their gradual "indentation-immersion" took place.

Every 4-6 hours, centimeter by centimeter, the surgeons immersed the organs into the abdominal cavity. And at the second stage, the baby underwent plastic surgery of the anterior abdominal wall. The boy was discharged a month after the operation. Parents never tire of thanking the doctors for saving their son.
