Record few patents registered in the United States in 2021

In 2021, the number of patents registered in the United States for various technologies decreased by 7.5% compared to the previous year. A total of 327.3 thousand patents were registered. This indicator has been declining for the second year in a row, but the fall in 2021 was the most significant in the last ten years.

The study was conducted by IFI Claims Patent Services, an intellectual property data analysis platform that has published the top 50 largest patent holders in the US market for decades.

The total number of US patent applications was 410,000, down 1% from 2020.

Most of the patents registered in the United States were held by local companies (45.8%), as well as Japanese (14.4%), South Korean (6.5%) and Chinese (6.3%). But only in Chinese firms this figure rose by 10% last year.

The American IBM (over 8.6 thousand) became the record holder for issued patents, followed by South Korean Samsung (6.4 thousand), Japan's Canon (3 thousand), Taiwan's TSMC (2.8 thousand), Chinese Huawei ( 2.77 thousand), as well as American Intel (2.6 thousand) and Apple (2.5 thousand).

Companies have patented digital data processing, digital information transmission, semiconductors, wireless communication networks, etc. The most actively (+ 35%) growth was in the number of patents related to computer systems based on specific computational models (machine and deep learning, quantum computers, computer systems based on biological models).

Over the past five years, the fastest growing categories in patenting have become computer models based on biological models (CAGR 54.5% in 2017–2021); crop innovations (42.5%); electric smoking devices (40.5%); machine learning (38.6%); quantum computers and computer systems based on quantum mechanical phenomena (35.9%); special opportunities associated with drilling soil for the extraction of oil, gas or water (35.6%), etc.

The leaders in the number of patents in the US among Russian companies are Kaspersky Lab (43), ABBYY (11), Rusal's Rusal Engineering and Technological Center (8), Skoltech (4), Rosatom (4).

Anton Tikhomirov, head of the department for strategic development of intellectual property at Kaspersky Lab, said that about 15% of the company's sales are in the United States, and it plans to develop in this region.
