FSB detains hacker group REvil

On January 14, 2022, Russian media (Interfax and TASS) reported that the Russian FSB had detained all members of the REvil hacker group during a special operation.

Media sources explained that law enforcement agencies detained 14 members of the hacker group, confiscated more than 426 million rubles from them during searches, including in cryptocurrency, 600 thousand dollars, 500 thousand euros.

All computer equipment, crypto wallets used to commit crimes, as well as 20 premium cars bought with money obtained by criminal means were confiscated from the detained hackers.

All detained members of REvil in Russia were charged under Part 2 of Art. 187 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal circulation of means of payment).

Experts from the Center for Public Relations of the Federal Security Service of Russia explained that the detained hackers developed malware, introduced it, organized the theft of funds from the bank accounts of foreign citizens and their cashing out, including by purchasing expensive goods on the Internet. The FSB did not disclose the identity of the detained members of the REvil hacker group.

The FSB clarified that the special operation to detain the hackers was carried out jointly with the Investigation Department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. Operational-search activities against the intruders were carried out at 25 addresses in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Leningrad and Lipetsk regions.
