Facebook admitted that its automatic system mistakenly blocked the page of the Russian delegation at the negotiations in Vienna

On January 18, 2022, Facebook admitted that its automatic content modernization system mistakenly blocked the page of the Russian delegation at the negotiations in Vienna.

The social network apologized to all users for the inconvenience caused by this incorrect automatic operation of the protective system. The moderators of the social network manually returned everything back as soon as they found out from the logs the reason for blocking the page and that it was due to a technical error. In fact, the problem was not resolved in the first 72 hours after the occurrence, although several complaints about it were sent to Facebook from the Russian side with requests to speed up the unblocking of the page.

A TASS source close to Roskomnadzor said that in connection with the current situation, the department even “discussed the possibility of slowing down Facebook in Russia.” According to the source, "the necessary organizational and technical preparations were made to take measures to slow down service in Russia." But in the end, access to the blocked page was restored by the social network itself before the restrictions were introduced.

On January 17, 2022, Roskomnadzor stated that Facebook promptly removed the block on its social network from the page of the Russian delegation at the negotiations in Vienna. The company did this at the request of the regulatory agency in less than 24 hours. Representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Russian Delegation on MIlitary Security and Arms Control account has been fully restored and nothing has been deleted by Facebook moderators.

On January 16, Roskomnadzor demanded that Facebook remove the blocking of the page of the Russian delegation at the talks in Vienna with the OSCE on security and arms control. Facebook moderators imposed restrictions on access to the page on the social network on January 14 without explanation, but only with a notification “for publishing prohibited content.” Representatives of the Russian delegation posted on their page on the social network only statements by the Russian leadership and the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the negotiations in Vienna.
