Red Cross servers hit by major cyberattack

Hackers carried out a large-scale cyber attack on the servers of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), compromising the data of more than 500 thousand people, according to the website of the international organization.

Information about the hack came earlier this week from at least 60 of the organization's National Societies around the world. As a result of a cyberattack, the ICRC has temporarily suspended the "Restoring Family Links" program.

“The data and confidential information of more than 515,000 vulnerable people have been compromised, including those who have been separated from their families due to conflict, migration, natural disasters... The attack on the data of the missing more more exacerbates the suffering and anguish of families,” the Red Cross said.

At the moment, the organization has no information about who carried out the cyber attack, however, according to preliminary data, there are currently no signs of leakage of confidential information. The ICRC staff urged the guilty hackers not to sell their data.

Earlier, the European Union began a cybersecurity exercise with a simulated attack on a fictitious Finnish energy company.
