Intel's expansion into mining hardware

At this year's International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), Intel plans to announce its entry into the world of mining with the Bonanza Mine, an energy-efficient ASIC specifically designed for mining ultra-low voltage (ultra-low) cryptocurrencies. -voltage, ULV), which it will soon launch on the market. It is not yet clear how close Intel is to completion, but the corporation already has large customers.

In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Griid said it entered into a contract with Intel last September to purchase ASIC hardware.

“We have entered into a definitive contract with Intel for the supply of ASICs that we expect will drive our growth. With the initial order for delivery in 2022, Griid will have access to a significant share of Intel's future production volumes."

Griid is a bitcoin mining startup headquartered in Ohio. Bitmain and MicroBT, the two largest ASIC hardware vendors, have been collaborating with thousands of units of their products deployed. It can be assumed that Intel is quickly becoming a viable competitor in this area.

Griid currently operates three industrial scale facilities, two in Tennessee and one in New York. All three sites together provide 48 megawatts of contracted capacity, while "the blended mix is approximately 74 percent carbon-free at a globally competitive cost."

The startup expects to significantly (up to 734 megawatts) increase its capacity by the end of next year - a staggering 1,429 percent growth. This is a huge opportunity for a company that is on the verge of listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) with a valuation of $3.3 billion.

“We are building an American infrastructure company with the largest non-carbon energy flow among public miners with the lowest cost of production at scale. Our team has demonstrated successful performance over the past three years since our founding, and we look forward to expanding capacity through this transaction.” – Griid CEO Trey Kelly last November.

Both Griid and Intel are apparently confident that mining will remain profitable up to $43,298.

The statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (PDF) does not indicate how much the contract is with Intel, nor how many ASIC units the company plans to purchase.
